Counseling Approach

Andrea’s social work experience includes work with cancer patients, survivors, and family members impacted by cancer, and crisis intervention with endangered adults and their family and community members. Prior to receiving her MSW from Indiana University, Andrea received a PhD in English from the University of Virginia and taught college writing and English for many years with a research focus on multi-ethnic contemporary fiction.

In her practice, Andrea draws on the compassion and empathy that literature fosters, and her college and high school teaching experience enriches her work with young adult and adolescent clients.

Andrea takes a strengths-based, trauma-informed approach to her integrative practice, while working within a psychodynamic frame that emphasizes cultural humility and the therapeutic alliance between client and therapist. Approaches that Andrea draws on include CBT, DBT, meaning-centered therapy, and mindfulness practices.

Outside of the Practice

Andrea has lived in Washington, DC for over 25 years and appreciates the many parks in the city. She enjoys reading, walking, running, biking, and spending time with friends and family, (including two young adult children and an energetic Great Pyrenees mix).
