Anxiety, like other disordered moods, is actually a natural, beneficial response in numerous situations. Anxiety is the body’s safety alert system that tells us to be on guard and pay attention to stay safe. When the potential danger that triggers anxiety is something that is resolved definitively, the anxious person experiences relief after the hazard has passed. Think about the way it feels to you to narrowly avoid an accident. There are physiological and psychological changes, like shallow breathing, rapid heart rate, and heightened focus, indicate you’re experiencing anxiety. Then, you feel an intense sense of relief when you realize you’re safe. Unfortunately, our daily struggles, like worry about job stability, financial stress, relationship issues, and other concerns that trigger anxiety don’t necessarily have a clear resolution. For this reason, people may find themselves feeling the effects of anxiety without any sense of relief.
If left untreated, chronic and disordered levels of anxiety may negatively impact all aspects of a person’s life, causing numerous adverse effects like:
Chronic or prolonged low-level anxiety can have a cumulative effect. That means that even small stressors can increase the already elevated anxiety to disproportionate levels, leaving people feeling overwhelmed by stress and worry. Therapy helps individuals to resolve the sources of anxiety, so they can experience the relief that allows them to reset anxiety levels and experience a sense of relief. In addition to processing existing sources of anxiety, therapy helps people to develop strategies to more effectively process new sources of anxiety as they arise.
Our knowledgeable therapists offer dynamic therapy for anxiety. That means we continually assess your progress and goals to deliver personalized therapy plans geared toward addressing individual needs. No two people are exactly alike, and your therapy journey with our team will be as unique as you are. During your introductory session, you will talk through your current experience with your therapist, and they’ll partner with you to create a plan to address your current anxiety and learn new skills to cope with anxiety in the future.
Each of our therapists has a unique skill set that they use a variety of evidence-based therapy approaches catered to meeting the client’s unique needs. Some of the methods we frequently use include:
College life presents many challenges: fitting in with new friends, finding your independence, and navigating a new campus, new city, and new social scene! Our trained therapists are here to help you to overcome any challenges you face, to achieve success in your academic and social life. Located right next to an American University shuttle stop, we are conveniently located very close to the American University campus.
Sometimes, group therapy can be a complement to individual therapy, as you will connect with others who are on a similar journey of healing. Periodically, we offer groups to our clients. Two recent groups that Dandelion has run have been a group for women facing transitions in their lives, and a group for teen girls focusing on journaling and reflection.
